Thyroid Problems and Hair Loss: Understanding the Connection

What Does Thyroid-Related Hair Loss Look Like?
Thyroid-related hair changes can vary from person to person.
The American Academy of Dermatology lists several hair changes that can be associated with thyroid disease, including:
Thinning hair
Increased shedding
Dry, coarse or brittle hair
Hair that breaks more easily
Changes in the speed of hair growth
Thinning or loss of the outer portion of the eyebrows
Some patients first notice that considerably more hair is coming out while washing or brushing. Others notice that their overall hair density has gradually decreased.
It is important to remember, however, that these symptoms do not prove that someone has thyroid disease.

Could Thyroid Medication Cause Hair Loss?
This can sometimes create confusion for patients.
A person may begin treatment for hypothyroidism and continue experiencing shedding for a period of time. Because hair follicles operate on a delayed biological cycle, changes in the hair may not immediately correspond with improvements elsewhere in the body.
Interestingly, Mayo Clinic also notes that temporary hair loss can occur during the first few months of levothyroxine therapy.
Patients should therefore not stop or change their thyroid medication because of hair loss without consulting their healthcare provider.
How Do You Know Whether Your Thyroid Is Involved?
Hair loss alone cannot diagnose a thyroid disorder.
If unexplained thinning occurs together with symptoms such as fatigue, unexplained weight changes, sensitivity to heat or cold, changes in heart rate or other systemic symptoms, a medical evaluation may be appropriate.
Blood testing is necessary to properly evaluate thyroid function.
TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) is commonly used as an initial test. Depending on the clinical situation, healthcare professionals may also evaluate free T4, T3 and thyroid antibodies.
The American Thyroid Association emphasizes that symptoms alone cannot establish a diagnosis of hypothyroidism because many of these symptoms can occur in people without thyroid disease.
Hair Loss Can Have More Than One Cause
Finding a thyroid abnormality doesn't necessarily mean that it explains all of a patient's hair loss.
Hair loss is frequently multifactorial.
Other potential contributors include:
Male or female pattern hair loss
Iron or other nutritional deficiencies
Significant psychological or physiological stress
Recent illness or surgery
Rapid weight loss
Pregnancy or postpartum hormonal changes
Certain medications
